Southeast Asia Climate Change Education Programme
A SEAQIS flagship programme that promotes environmental education for sustainable development and climate change education by improving the quality of teachers across Southeast Asia. It is designed for the 2021–2030 period, in line with the SEAMES Strategic Plan.
SEA-CEP is a SEAQIS flagship programme that focuses on two priority areas: Environmental Education for Sustainable Development (EESD) and Climate Change Education (CCE). The programme is designed to strengthen science teachers' ability to integrate climate change issues into everyday teaching and learning.
Environmental and climate change issues have been part of SEAQIS training since the centre was founded in 2009. For the 2021–2030 period, SEA-CEP was formally established as a long-term strategic programme aligned with the SEAMES Strategic Plan and supporting the achievement of SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
SEA-CEP does more than transfer knowledge — it develops climate agents of change among teachers and students across Southeast Asia, encouraging them to contribute meaningfully to the global net-zero emissions target.
"A fundamental change is needed in the way we think about education's role in global development, because it has a catalytic impact on the well-being of individuals and the future of our planet."
UNESCO — ESD Learning Objectives
Each pillar is designed to reinforce the others — from teacher training to building a network of climate communities.
Two main training pathways for science teachers and education personnel:
Mobilising environmental actors through competitions and partnerships:
A platform for environmental actors across the region to share through a range of media:
Developing learning resources to support all SEA-CEP activities:
A prestigious SEAQIS award within the SEA-CEP ecosystem that recognises individuals and groups making a real contribution to environmental education and climate action in their communities.
SEA-CEP supports schools in becoming Climate Resilience Schools (CRS) — schools that actively integrate climate education and practical pro-environmental action within their communities.
CRS schools integrate EESD/CCE modules into Science, Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS), and other subjects across the curriculum, in line with each country's national curriculum.
CRS schools involve the wider community — parents, local government, and environmental organisations — in hands-on action programmes for climate change adaptation and mitigation.
Schools that meet the CRS criteria receive formal recognition from SEAQIS as part of the Southeast Asian Climate Resilience School network.
Sign up for SEA-CEP training, nominate your school as a Climate Resilience School, or join the regional EESD/CCE network as a partner.
